Different Types of Rejuvenating Rest

Simply relying on sleep is not enough to address exhaustion and frustration. In fact, an exclusive focus on sleep can potentially lead to burnout because other vital forms of rest remain neglected.
The Seven Essential Rests
Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D., the author of Sacred Rest, highlights the significance of rest as an underutilized, chemical-free, safe, and effective alternative therapy.
She described the seven essential rests that our bodies and minds require to combat chronic rest deficits:
Physical Rest: Physical rest involves taking a break from activities that drain our energy. It encompasses sleep, relaxation, napping, and even "active" physical rest, such as engaging in light, restorative exercises like yoga, stretching, or massages.
Mental Rest: If your mind races the moment you lay down to sleep, you may be experiencing a mental rest deficit. Although sleep helps, it may not feel fully restorative. To address this, Dalton-Smith suggests incorporating short breaks throughout the workday or engaging in journaling before bedtime. One technique that can help is "thought diffusion," which involves observing thoughts without exerting pressure on them to speed up or slow down.
Sensory Rest: Our modern world bombards us with constant stimulation from screens, conversations, lights, and more. Dalton-Smith recommends intentional sensory deprivation to recharge from this overstimulation. For instance, try setting aside at least 45 minutes without screen time before bed. Another useful exercise is "Five senses grounding," where you focus on each sense individually to become present and grounded.
Emotional Rest: Emotional rest provides us with the space to be authentic and vulnerable. Suppressing emotions adds internal pressure and unrest. Instead, allowing ourselves to express our true feelings, even if they are negative, can lead to emotional release and restoration. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who bring emotional peace is also essential.
Social Rest: Understanding our social energy limits is crucial, whether we are introverts or extroverts. Knowing when we need to recharge and communicating these needs with others, especially our partners, is important. Different people have varying thresholds for sociability, so open dialogue is essential to ensure everyone's needs are met.
Creative Rest: For individuals in creative fields, creative rest is imperative. Creative blockages, fatigue, and burnout can hinder productivity and well-being. To attain creative rest, surround yourself with inspiration while relieving the pressure to constantly "do" something with it. Allow your mind the freedom to explore and let ideas flow naturally.
Spiritual Rest: Our bodies and minds often long for spiritual rest—a deeper connection with something greater than ourselves. Incorporating practices like prayer, meditation, or finding purpose in our lives can provide this rest. Seeking out communities that foster acceptance and intention, whether through religious organizations, volunteer programs, community outreach, or nature retreats, can help fulfill this need.
Bonus: Cellular/Systemic Rest
Cellular/Systemic rest involves giving our entire body system a break from internal stressors. Nourishing our bodies with healthy, easily digestible foods and reducing the consumption of processed, high-fat, and high-sugar foods can help alleviate fatigue and lethargy. Being mindful of caffeine consumption to provide rest for our adrenals is equally important.
Takeaway
To combat exhaustion and burnout, it is crucial to prioritize and nurture each of these essential rests in our lives. Following Dalton-Smith's advice, start by incorporating small pockets of rest into each day. Some rests may be easier to implement than others, but the key
Coaches Q&A
Q: How do I know if I am living to my fullest potential?
- A.C. Canada
A: Discovering if you’re living to your fullest potential is something we all struggle with, and because the answer is very unique to each person, it’s best accomplished through self-reflection. To assist you with this, consider the following aspects:
Passion and Engagement: Are you genuinely enthusiastic and committed to your pursuits?
Embracing Challenges: Are you stepping outside of your comfort zone and taking on new challenges?
Learning from Setbacks: Do you see failures as opportunities for growth and learning?
Continuous Personal Development: Are you actively investing in your personal growth through learning and acquiring new skills?
Supportive Relationships: Assess the relationships in your life and ensure they uplift and inspire you.
If you answered yes to a majority of these, then you are on your way to uncovering your fullest potential. However, if not, you know where you have work to do! Just know that living to your fullest potential is an ongoing journey, not a destination.
